Summary:

After the Apocalypse, Aziraphale ventures into a new space in the gay milieu – Grindr. There he starts talking to a charming young man who certainly doesn’t bear any resemblance at all to a certain long streak of demon, not one bit, no thank you.

Meanwhile, Aziraphale and Crowley navigate their friendship after the world failed to end. There is much drinking and silliness, but could it be that there are other feelings lurking underneath?? Of course there are, this is fanfic.

Why this fic is awesome:

The pure blooming goddamn hilarity and ICness of both Aziraphale and Crowley got me from the beginning, but cemented after I could be found lying in bed cackling like Agnes Nutter during some drunken shenanigans involving eating and drinking a ridiculous amount being on a celestial/occult bender around London including a certain someone using miracles to create a never ending bag of Monster Munch, along with some very very London OC friends from the sex shop next door.

The story itself is both in turns steamy hot (NSFW!) and absolutely hilarious in the best and most in-character way. Aziraphale gets a smartphone and starts chatting away on grindr in a lovely sex-positive way that makes sense for an angel with a bookshop in Soho. The whole setting, the understanding of the area and the people just rang true to me in a beautiful, wonderfully entertaining way. I can’t wait to go back and read it all again AND YOU SHOULD TOO.

Why this fic is awesome:

This fic is fundamentally, completely, beautifully, glorious. As the summary says Aziraphale arrives at the Dowling Household as Miss Frances Fell, the gardener and Crowley- who has of course always been in love with Aziraphale in any and all forms- is totally bewitched by an Aziraphale who discovers a new sense of liberation and freedom in this female corporation.

The descriptions of both characters, from each others’ eyes, are lush, lustful and intensley beautiful (because of course rather than learn how to garden to get into the role, Aziraphale went around buying a lot of luxurious underwear instead). The fic also contains some wonderful portraits of the Dowling household, Warlock and Harriet Dowling and Nanny’s friendship (and a Nanny who suggests she was in MI5 because Crowley really really does think she could be James Bond, okay?)

This is not normally my jam which is why I love it so much that the author has completely convinced me into this tale- and there are some wonderful humorous moments which I won’t spoil, but also terrific little asides and details that just work, like:

“It had clicked for Crowley in the strangest way, when one day Aziraphale had been humming around the rose garden and regaling the teacup climbers with snatches of West Side Story. When you heard a being like Aziraphale announce in song that she felt pretty and witty and gay, you tended to believe it. Especially the gay part. It seemed that no matter what her presentation or corporation, her essence remained the same – gay as a rainbow flag and camper than a row of pink tents.”

 

And

“Like most angels, Aziraphale sang, but in true Aziraphale fashion she didn’t quite get it right. In her regular corporation she was a powerful light baritone. Too powerful, in fact, and she’d been shunted discreetly out of the Heavenly Choir for sounding a bit too Gilbert and Sullivan.”

IT JUST MAKES IT WORK SO WELL.

The descriptions are so lush and beautiful you will want to devour this in one sitting, but also equisitely agonisingly you want to make it last!

GUYS. GUYS. THERE ARE ACTUAL SONGS. BEAUTIFUL ACTUAL SONGS available on soundcloud and embedded into the fic. This is a whole new level of fandom-wonderfulness-genius.

Also love the full on 90s musical awareness brit-pop thing going on. Of course Crowley was in a band in the 90s. It makes total sense it’s just so lovely.

Why this fic (and also the podfic) is awesome:

I do love a social media fic and this one is a corker. Insta-famous influencer pitches a fit and starts a campaign against Aziraphale’s lack of Christmas decoration (“ruining the aesthetic”). Cue chaos in the bookshop, mischief and hijinks. It’s just a whole load of fun packed neatly into a nicely written fic with a great tone throughout. Enjoy!

Why this fic is awesome: Set post-book, Aziraphale goes back to his usual life but Crowley really struggles without having a sense of direction. Featuring beautiful fluffiness but also a delightfully IC Crowley as an Uber driver causing both his own brand of trouble (and his own brand of kindness) to the humans of London. The Podfic version by CompassRose is also superb, a really enjoyable fic.

Avengers Fic Rec: This, You Protect by Owlet

Why this fic is awesome:

It is stunningly written. The use of language is so clever here that we get to almost see Bucky’s programming break down and the progression from Asset to Barnes to ‘Self’hood is really well done. It’s also really, really funny- full of wit and snark which stops it all getting too unbearably depressing whenever any of the characters think about what happened to Bucky. I love his developing love of coffee, his slow progression from distant to close, and the wonderful OCs who just by being simple, human, friendly (or not so friendly) and there help him to find his way back to himself.

Unputdownable and thoroughly, thoroughly worth the read.

Why this fic is awesome: (NB I am counting to two fics listed in this series as one, because when I read them they feel more like chapters than separate entities). The writing style makes this fic work. We have: Carlos and Cecil necking in a drive in, we have confusion, embarrasment and awkwardness. We have a delightfully sexy Cecil and a very nervous, awkward Carlos who has tried so hard to prepare to be a good boyfriend despite exceedingly little experience (He has been TAKING NOTES of videos, bless him) only to have all his nervous scientific planning thrown out of the water by the fact that what’s in Cecil’s pants is…not expected.

I wuld have recced this earlier except I couldn’t find the RIGHT tentacle fic. Only in Night Vale fandom, guys, seriously.

Summary: Carlos’s reaction to the first date involves a lot more anguished cries than Cecil’s, though to be fair, they’re only anguished cries of “Why did I do that, why did I say that, why am I allowed to interact with other people” so they’re still better than at least eighty percent of Night Vale’s late night wails.

Why this fic is awesome: Carlos is adorable! Carlos keeps lists of Things People Have Said To Him and struggles to communicate in words. Or, at least, words that do not make him cringe half an hour later when he realises what he said. This is wonderfully Night Vale in its writing, totally headcanon – I especially liked the intervenion from the Sherriff’s Secret Police.

The Night Vale fandom has a phrase for this: “Adorable Dorks in Love”. This is what this fic is all about.

It is only a short fic, but I absolutely love it- it is one fic that I feel really gets and expresses the spirit of Night Vale’s world. It is strange and cute and makes me smile, a real one for a rainy day.
