Why this fic is awesome:

I love the slow, subtle cues the author uses to show the Winter Soldier’s programming breaking down early on. It makes one’s heard clench to read it. I also like how neatly it crossed over with Agents of SHIELD (and oh, Coulson, thinking it was Clint when an unseen sniper suddenly assists his team!) All in all it is both heart-wrending and heart-warming in turns and an excellent Winter Soldier storyline told well and cleverly.

Why this fic is awesome: Great premise- Tony was in the car when his parents were killed, the Winter Soldier for reasons he doesn’t understand at the time, takes the boy with him and goes on the run. This is a really interesting idea and it is explored well and is well paced to be absorbing.

And Tiny!Tony is awesome.

Why this fic is awesome:

It is stunningly written. The use of language is so clever here that we get to almost see Bucky’s programming break down and the progression from Asset to Barnes to ‘Self’hood is really well done. It’s also really, really funny- full of wit and snark which stops it all getting too unbearably depressing whenever any of the characters think about what happened to Bucky. I love his developing love of coffee, his slow progression from distant to close, and the wonderful OCs who just by being simple, human, friendly (or not so friendly) and there help him to find his way back to himself.

Unputdownable and thoroughly, thoroughly worth the read.

Why this fic is awesome: It is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. No, really. Bucky has now caught up with Steve (or Steve with Bucky- it’s a litle of both) but he- both of them- are struggling to cope. Steve is trying to help him but Bucky’s demons aren’t all ones that Steve can help him fight. Tony, mostly by being Tony Stark Awesome helps rather a lot, including giving Bucky a Tiny Pet Robot.

Written after, and covering the period of, Ootp, please do not let the idea of all these OCs put you off. This fic is, above all else, extremely clever. Taking the premise that the comic book “Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle” is not just a simple children’s comic, but a comic that children enjoy on one level, but also posesses a satiric side that adults enjoy, Berowne the artist uses the comic to criticise the incompetence of the Ministry at every turn until, just as he has finished what would probably be the most inflammatory issue ever, he is attacked by the werewolf. His story, of a newly-turned werewolf trying to adapt in a society that not only hates werewolves, but is also overrun by incompetent and unthinkining ministry officials, intersects then with Remus Lupin’s when he is put into St Mungo’s sharing a room with Arthur Weasley, who has just been attacked by Nagini. This story will make you laugh, but it is also a dark humour, it is almost a satire-within-a satire-within-a-satire, the Ministry of Magic’s incompetence and unfeeling makes us laugh because it reflects elements of real life, only made larger than life. Also, it does not shy away from tragedy and fear that are so inherent to war. It is clever, funny, sad, interesting and all over a blooming good read!

Why this fic is awesome: I love the youth of Sirius and to an extent Remus in this, learning to cope with traumatic upheaval, death of their friends and caring for baby Harry. In a world where Voldemort isn’t vanquished that Halloween night, Sirius takes custody of baby Harry and Dumbledore, somewhat dubious of Sirius’ ability to cope with looking after the child and to stay hidden, ties them together by a spell. Sirius has to learn to live without magic and without money- a big change from anything he has ever know. I particularly like the mentions of wizarding religion in this, which Sirius falls back to now that everything familiar has been taken from him and James & Lily dead. An excellent fic with sadness and immense amounts of pleasure and happiness too.

Why this fic is awesome:

First of all, I did read this before The Avengers film came out (and, if I’m being honest, before I got round to Thor but that’s only because space!films are really not my usual thing, so in some ways it might be harder for someone coming to it now to accept this particular version of Loki who, rather than falling and meeting the Chitauri, falls to Midgard and, wracked by pain and guilt and fear of Odin and Thor’s wrath, ends up hiding out in a tiny little town and becoming part of the local community. BUT this fic is still awesome. If you can get your head around a more fannish, pre-Avengers version of Loki it is most definitely worth it as Loki’s story is deeply thought out, well written, well plotted and an absolutely delightful read.
