“Oh, so I should probably cut you loose,” the Soldier deadpanned.

“It’s a medical emergency. You don’t want to be responsible for me losing limbs, do you?”

“Tell you what, if you lose your hands, I’ll make you some new ones.” He held up his metal hand, smallest finger crooked. “Pinkie promise.”

 

Secret Agent adversaries-to-lovers AU where the Winter Soldier keeps tying Captain America to walls and sticking around to chat. Shut up, Natasha, it’s not flirting, okay? (It’s definitely flirting.)

Why this fic is awesome:

SO The Winter Soldier escapes Hydra and by the time Steve’s on the scene WS is an assassin-slash-bodyguard for hire who geeks out over Steve’s strategic planning whenever their paths meet. Steve is a goner.

Steve is a small trans florist who knows his way around a baseball bat. Bucky is a fugitive from the men that have hurt him for seventy years. Their paths cross one night when, panicked and alone, Bucky decides to hide in Steve’s shop.

Why this fic is awesome

So we have Winter Soldier formerly Cap! Bucky and a modern day trans!Steve which, let’s face it, is a pretty promising beginning but truly this fic is lovely. Steve is still very much Steve (and yes, tiny!Steve) who finds a man in his shop who clearly needs help. Bucky, amnesiac on the run from Hydra doesn’t know what to make of this tiny guy who isn’t afraid of him and lets him stay. Particular kudos in this fic to the fact that whilst Steve being trans is discussed within the story, it does not become the story or overtake the overall narrative of Bucky learning to trust and both of them learning to love. ❤ Adorbs!

Bucky Barnes is the owner of a cat sanctuary in Brooklyn, an ordinary guy by the Avengers’ low standards, and a growing problem for America’s favourite captain. Steve Rogers is publicly straight, endlessly bored, and has a habit of not fully thinking through his decisions when Bucky is around.

Why this fic is awesome: I do enjoy the occasional AU particlarly when one character is different but the others are the same. In this Bucky is the owner of a cat shelter and Steve is still Captain America. This fic contains a history geek! Bucky who names his cats after Presidents, a still-quite-depressed Steve, a hilariously gormless Ant-Man and a Hydra plot all about the Winter Soldier (but it would spoil the fun if I explained that one further). It’s got some lovely characters and is a lot of fun to read.
